TEMPERATURE INSTRUMENTS

Temperature measurement in today’s industrial settings involves a wide range of applications and requirements. To address this diversity, the process control industry has developed a broad selection of sensors and instruments tailored to specific needs. In this experiment, you will explore the principles and applications of several common temperature transducers and gain hands-on experience using them.

Temperature is one of the most critical and frequently measured parameters for mechanical engineers. It plays a key role in many processes that require either monitoring or control. Applications range from simple tasks like tracking the water temperature in engines or load devices, to more complex scenarios such as controlling the temperature during laser welding.

Some temperature measurements present unique challenges—such as monitoring exhaust gases from a rocket, emissions from a power plant stack, or temperatures inside a blast furnace. More commonly, engineers deal with measuring fluid temperatures in process systems or support equipment, and surface temperatures of solid components like metal plates, bearings, and rotating shafts in machinery.
